Africa has a surface density of 30.3 million km2, thus making her the third largest continent in our planet after Asia and America. Africa is approximately three times bigger than Europe. It is remarkable for her countless tribes, the legacy of colonialism and the consequences of the poverty on the majority of her population.
The African continent is not only rich in contrasting cultures, but also possesses an immense Language Plurality. Boasting of more than 2,500 different languages, Africa has the highest language density among the continents. Many Languages have only been handed down orally from generation to generation, and have thus gradually become partially extinct due to the emigration of the younger generation.
One of the aims of Intertranslation is the propagation of the numerous cultures of the black continent hence specialising in the area of African Languages.
Classification of the languages
African Languages have been classified in four groups or phyla since the fifties.
- Afro-Asian with around 350 languages and 350 million people in North Africa and West Asia
- Niger-Congo with around 1,400 languages and 350 million people in West, Central and South Africa
- Nilo-Saharan with approximately 200 languages and 350 million people from Sudan extending to Mali
- Khoisan with 28 languages and 355 thousand people, especially in South-West Africa
The Languages Swahili, Hausa and Fulbe rank in the top 50 of the most popular spoken Languages, each of them is spoken by more than a million people. Arabic, Hausa and Amharic belong to the Afro-Asian classification of Languages, while Bambara, Swahili, Wolof, Yoruba and Zulu are classified as Niger-Congo Languages. The Khoisan Languages are spoken by the Khoisan people in the south of Africa.
